Audio PlayerYear 1 had an amazing time at Think Tank! We explored how our bodies work, where different animals live and the amazing inventions that changed the world!
We learnt about water pressure and the uses of pulleys and leavers in the science garden. We also tried our hand at being doctors, dentists, police officers, hairdressers and so much more in Little Brum.
We had such a fabulous time and Year 1 learnt so much and had so much fun!
Year 2 had a fabulous day at the ThinkTank Science Museum in Birmingham last Friday. The children took part in a wide range of interactive science exhibitions and learning zones.
Our first task was to explore the Little Brum role play zone. There were a wide range of role play shops and building areas with science challenges incorporated. The Year 2 boys enjoyed teaching each other the best way to lay bricks to create a sturdy wall!
We also enjoyed a session in the Science Garden. There were lots of challenges involving water which were very popular. The children challenged each other to boat races and discovered where to place the boat to win every time. They also discovered how canal locks work, ran in a hamster wheel and used their upper body strength to pull themselves up into the air.
We also had the opportunity to learn about our bodies and how they work and discovered how trains, planes and trams were powered in the past.
All of the children thoroughly enjoyed the day. There really was so much to see and do!Take a closer look at what we got up to…
Dear Parents and Carers of Year 2 and Year 6 pupils,
I would like to invite you along to an exciting new project launch that BRW will be hosting. We are delighted to have been selected to work with the independent charity National Numeracy on an exciting project that encourages children and families to do maths together at home.
This project will be initially rolled out to only Year 2 and Year 6 families. In order to explain more and demonstrate how this project will work, we would like as many parents/carers of Year 2 and Year 6 pupils to attend a launch presentation and workshop on the following dates:
Year 2 Parents à Wednesday 29th November 2023, 9.00-10.00
Year 6 Parents – Wednesday 4th December 2023, 9.00-10.00
During each launch session, a presentation will take place in which the aims and actions of the National Numeracy Parental Engagement Project will be explained. After this, parents will be invited into their child’s class to sit alongside them and have a go at some maths home-learning together. And, of course, a warm drink and mid-morning biscuits will be on hand!
Please note that these two year-group-specific launch events are different to our National Numeracy Workshop event, which we will be hosting on Wednesday 22nd with our Coffee Morning. This is open to all parents.
We hope to engage and welcome as many Year 2 and Year 6 parents as possible to the above two events. At BRW, we share your goal as a parent of supporting your child to achieve a confident level of numeracy that will lead to success. This project aims to achieve exactly this!

This week, Year 3 have been learning about the importance of Remembrance Day. We also learned about the significance of the Poppy and looked at examples of it in Art. We then spent time sketching and using watercolours to create our own artwork. We’re very proud of our results, have a look…
In Year 2, we’ve been celebrating Black History Month. We have been busy reading books that celebrate Black History and finding out about the achievements of significant black people. The children have had lots of discussions about why this is important and the struggles that many black people have faced because of the colour of their skin.
Year 2 were especially interested in the life and achievements of Maya Angelou. They were saddened to discover that she was treated differently because of the colour of her skin. This led to some important discussions about racism and equality for all.
They children identified that Maya Angelou used her struggles and obstacles to make her more determined to achieve her dreams. The children were very inspired by her words and this is what they had to say about her:
“Maya was a champion because she did so many good things. She even got medals for them.”
“Maya changed jobs so many times. She was helpful and wanted to make the world fair.”
“Maya was brilliant. She helped people by being good and never giving up.”
“Maya had a bad life when she was young. She became a superstar though. She was a very good mother and a brave person. She never gave up.”
“Maya was a very beautiful lady, inside and out. People were wrong to not like her because of her skin colour.”
Year 2 created their own portraits of Maya Angelou which they are keen to share with others. Take a look at our fabulous pieces.
At BRW, we have been celebrating Black History Month. This year, the focus is ‘Saluting Our Sisters’, which recognises that despite their countless contributions to society, the exceptional achievements of black women, in particular, have too often been overlooked or forgotten.
In Year 6, we’ve been celebrating Black History Month and have been so excited to learn about the achievements of black women. Each morning, we listen to a playlist of music celebrating black artists and the children have chosen some inclusive books to read in class. As part of our BHM project, we chose someone who inspired us and researched their amazing contributions to society. To accompany our research, we then some collage artwork to represent the person. Take a look at our work! These will be displayed in the Year 6 classroom after half term.
In Year 4 we have celebrated Black History Month by learning all about Nina Simone. Growing up as a black woman in America, she faced many challenges and setbacks, yet still pursued her dream and showed courage and resilience. She used her songs to convey powerful messages of justice for black people in America, supporting the Civil Rights Movement. We have been using art to celebrate her and showcase some of her inspiring lyrics.
After being rained off for our first visit to Glapton Woods this term, we made the most of our next two visits.
One visit focused on finding sticks of different types and using mathematical and scientific language to describe them – these are the words that were used, “spiky, small, long, chunky, bumpy, smooth, rough, bendy, straight and leafy”.
The next visit focused on learning about what animals live in the woods – the children found out that squirrels live in dreys, foxes in dens, rabbits in warrens, badgers in setts, hedgehogs in nests and owls in nests, but this time up in a tree. They, then, worked in group to make some homes for animals ensuring they had food, shelter and lovely, soft beds.
