This week is the 30th Anniversary of British Science Week, so the theme this year is Time!
We got off to a super start this morning with our Science Ambassadors leading a whole school assembly. We began with learnig a little about our Science saint – At. Albert the Great, and read a prayer that last year’s ambassadors wrote. They shared the theme and lots of links to our own lifes and science that we can make with science. They launched the Poster competition and ran the lunch-time ‘Gadget Shop’ which will run Mon-Thursday this week, until all stock is sold. Prices range from 50p to £2. We’ve had a wonderful but very busy day at BRW. We welcomed Bemma Akyeampong, author of the Ayuda stories – set in Guinea-Bissau, all about a sea turtle’s adventures and struggles against pollution. She retold her stories to all the children and they had chance to think about what they could do to look after our wonderful world.
We also had the introduction of our wonderful new furniture to spruce up our reading corners in every classroom. This will really help to promote the joy of reading, learning new vocabulary and being inspired to be authors ourselves.
As the photographs show, the reading cafe was immensely popular and the cakes didn’t last long! Thank you everyone for attending and for the cake donations.
Year 2 have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating World Book Day today! They started off the day with a special assembly where we met author Bemma Akyeampong.
Back in class Bemma came to visit us and told us her story Ayuda’s Messy Rescue. The children joined in with the story telling by adding actions and joining in with the story. They were also able to ask Bemma lots of questions about her books.
Later on in the day, we helped Mrs Cook to set up our new reading corner. We have a comfy chair to sit on and lots of lovely beanbags. We read lots of books, shared stories and read to each other. What a busy book day so far!
Year 2 are thoroughly enjoying taking part in fundraising activitites for CAFOD this year.
We started out fundraising by walking 10 laps of the KS2 playground for the Big Lent Walk. It took a long time but it was worth it as we raised over £30!
Our next fundraising task happened last Friday. Mrs Cook told Year 2 that she would bring in some doughnuts for a little treat. We were all allowed one as long as we put £1 in our jar. Year 2 were very enthusiastic about this fundraising task and the pounds came in thick and fast. We raised over £40 by eating Mrs Cook’s doughnuts! They were so yummy that we suggested that we do it every week.
We are currently thinking of our next task to add some more money to the jar. We can’t wait to see how much we can raise before Easter.
Thank you to all of the families that have kindly donated to our Lenten Fundraiser.
Thank you to the Library Leaders for getting our exciting week off to a great start. They told us about Saint Jerome who was asked to translate the Bible so that more people could know God’s word. He did such a good job that his translation was used for more than 1,000 years.
Don’t forget that if you want to be in with a chance of winning a book, return your Scavenger Hunt sheets by Thursday. Good Luck!
Year 2 are currently enjoying reading Alice in Wonderland. We have enjoyed reading the text chapter by chapter and comparing the story to the Disney animation.
This week the children have been writing missing posters for both Alice and the White Rabbit. They used success criteria to write informative posters and then edited them to make them even better.
Take a look at the wonderful pieces of work that Year 2 have created. We are all very proud of their writing!
Year 2 retold the story of the very first Christmas today through their performance of A King is Born. They sang, danced, acted and shared their story with so much confidence and enthusiasm.
We are all so proud of the Year 2 children. They really are a class full of superstars! Thank you so much to all of the parents, carers, family members and friends who came to support us.
We wish you all a very Happy Christmas!
World Youth Funday – Friday 24 November
Theme: “Jesus never closes the door, never, but invites you to enter: Come and See.“
Pope Francis, WYD Lisbon 2023
Children across the school took part in activities to:
- Become aware of the presence of God
- Review the day with gratitude
- Pay attention to your emotions
- Look towards tomorrow
- Ask for help
Printable You Are Called Prayer Cards Colour
Foundation Stage One did all of the above and practised their calm breathing.
‘Year 1 got involved in World Youth Day by dancing and singing about how Jesus Loves us, thinking about the different jobs and roles young people can play in the life of the church. We also had some reflection time to think about how important it is that we attend church and actively engage in our church community. Finally we thought about how lucky we are and prayed for those young people in the world who do not have all of the things we do.’
Year 2
Year 2 had a fabulous day at the ThinkTank Science Museum in Birmingham last Friday. The children took part in a wide range of interactive science exhibitions and learning zones.
Our first task was to explore the Little Brum role play zone. There were a wide range of role play shops and building areas with science challenges incorporated. The Year 2 boys enjoyed teaching each other the best way to lay bricks to create a sturdy wall!
We also enjoyed a session in the Science Garden. There were lots of challenges involving water which were very popular. The children challenged each other to boat races and discovered where to place the boat to win every time. They also discovered how canal locks work, ran in a hamster wheel and used their upper body strength to pull themselves up into the air.
We also had the opportunity to learn about our bodies and how they work and discovered how trains, planes and trams were powered in the past.
All of the children thoroughly enjoyed the day. There really was so much to see and do!Take a closer look at what we got up to…
Dear Parents and Carers of Year 2 and Year 6 pupils,
I would like to invite you along to an exciting new project launch that BRW will be hosting. We are delighted to have been selected to work with the independent charity National Numeracy on an exciting project that encourages children and families to do maths together at home.
This project will be initially rolled out to only Year 2 and Year 6 families. In order to explain more and demonstrate how this project will work, we would like as many parents/carers of Year 2 and Year 6 pupils to attend a launch presentation and workshop on the following dates:
Year 2 Parents à Wednesday 29th November 2023, 9.00-10.00
Year 6 Parents – Wednesday 4th December 2023, 9.00-10.00
During each launch session, a presentation will take place in which the aims and actions of the National Numeracy Parental Engagement Project will be explained. After this, parents will be invited into their child’s class to sit alongside them and have a go at some maths home-learning together. And, of course, a warm drink and mid-morning biscuits will be on hand!
Please note that these two year-group-specific launch events are different to our National Numeracy Workshop event, which we will be hosting on Wednesday 22nd with our Coffee Morning. This is open to all parents.
We hope to engage and welcome as many Year 2 and Year 6 parents as possible to the above two events. At BRW, we share your goal as a parent of supporting your child to achieve a confident level of numeracy that will lead to success. This project aims to achieve exactly this!
Please sign up to attend your event by emailing/phoning/going into the school office in person.
As a pre-cursor to the launches, National Numeracy is keen to hear from parents about their feelings and thoughts around maths. As such, we would like to you spend ten minutes completing the survey found on the link/QR code below. Thank you to those parents who were able to complete the survey at their parent consultations. If you were unable to, as a parent/carer of a child in Year 2/Year 6, we greatly encourage and appreciate your participation to make sure your views are heard and to better support our pupils’ attitudes to maths!
Please access the initial survey via this link or QR code: https://nn.typeform.com/to/cUijAfNv
Best wishes,
Mrs C Hautenne
