In Year 4 we have celebrated Black History Month by learning all about Nina Simone. Growing up as a black woman in America, she faced many challenges and setbacks, yet still pursued her dream and showed courage and resilience. She used her songs to convey powerful messages of justice for black people in America, supporting the Civil Rights Movement. We have been using art to celebrate her and showcase some of her inspiring lyrics.
After being rained off for our first visit to Glapton Woods this term, we made the most of our next two visits.
One visit focused on finding sticks of different types and using mathematical and scientific language to describe them – these are the words that were used, “spiky, small, long, chunky, bumpy, smooth, rough, bendy, straight and leafy”.
The next visit focused on learning about what animals live in the woods – the children found out that squirrels live in dreys, foxes in dens, rabbits in warrens, badgers in setts, hedgehogs in nests and owls in nests, but this time up in a tree. They, then, worked in group to make some homes for animals ensuring they had food, shelter and lovely, soft beds.
Year 6 celebrated World Mental Health Day in true style this year – wearing bright colours and completing some RHE lessons. The children looked fabulous in their colourful clothes, spreading joy and happiness around school. Throughout the day, they participated in two RHE lessons; Gifts and Talents and ‘Pressures’. They learnt that our unique gifts and talents come from God, identified what they looked like and discussed how they can embrace ‘I AM WHO I AM’ this year at BRW. Year 6 then discussed pressures that we face in life; from homework, to exam results, peer pressures or self-pressure. They explored how these can be positive and negative and strategies to cope with them. Take a look at what we got up to…

Year 2 are thoroughly enjoying PE lessons this half term. We have been learning all about the importance of building teams which work together and support each other. The children have been set a number of tasks which require the children to solve problems and work together in order to compete with their peers.
The children have loved being challenged, explored the importance of good sportsmanship and why teamwork really does make the dream work!
Look how much fun we are having!
Year 1 have been focusing on the importance of being a part of a family in our Come and See work. We have been thinking about what Jesus’s family would have been like. We used role play to explore the differences and similarities there would have been between Jesus’s family and ours. We also built houses like the one Jesus would have lived in.
In year 5, we have been learning about how light travels. As part of this learning we have investigated which materials would be best for a WWII search light to spot planes in the sky during blackouts. The children enjoyed designing this practical and presented their findings by using graphs.
The KS1 Liturgy Team planned a beautiful liturgy for us to enjoy and reflect upon. The scripture was from Matthew and the key message was: God loves everyone equally.
We know sometimes children come home from school and, when asked what they’ve been doing at school, answer, “Nothing” or “Just played”!
Here is the evidence of how busy they have been, developing their language, learning how to play kindly with each other, building up their muscles, investigating, practising counting, reading, writing and so much more, whilst, just playing!
Year 3 are about to write their own playscript so in order to do this, they are immersing themselves in what a playscript is. We started with using a playscript of Goldilocks and the Three Bears to read through and act out in class. We tried to find differences between this type of text and others we have encountered. Next, we will examine the features of a playscript in more detail before gathering ideas for our own ‘Revolting Rhymes’ style script.
The children were very organised in allocating roles, practising their lines and acting it out before the rest of the class. Such confidence!
In Year 6, we have begun learning about unconditional love and what this means within our Come and See topic ‘Loving’. We explored scripture from Isaiah, who was inspired by God to urge people to look forward to the coming of the Messiah, who would rescue them from those who threatened them. After lots of discussion and understanding of how God shows us unconditional love and how we can show this to others, we then began creating a collage to represent ‘unconditional love’. Take a look at some of our learning….
