Year 3 have been studying rocks this half-term. First, we make some close-up observational and scientific drawings that were very detailed.
We have also learned about the three different types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, each formed through distinct geological processes. We have begun some comparative investigations to see if we can work out what types of rocks we have. (Click on this link to know the differences between rocks)
We were thinking about why the properties of materials is an important thing to consider when making things, such as roof tiles, ornaments and paving slabs. We used the ‘Scratch test’ to order rocks in order of hardness and discovered that Sedimentary rocks are usually a lot softer than igneous and metamorphic rocks.
Here are some photos of us hard at work as Petrologists!
