Protected Characteristics
At Blessed Robert Widmerpool Catholic Voluntary Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every member of our school community is treated with dignity, respect and fairness. We celebrate the uniqueness of each person and recognise the value that diversity brings to our school family.
The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. It identifies nine protected characteristics:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Race (including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin)
- Religion or belief
- Marriage or civil partnership
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
- Pregnancy and maternity
As a Catholic school, we believe that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and is therefore deserving of respect, compassion and understanding. Discrimination of any kind is not tolerated at Blessed Robert Widmerpool, and we are proud of the respect and kindness shown by our pupils towards others.
We teach about diversity, inclusion and respect through our curriculum, including Religious Education (RE), Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE). Pupils develop an understanding of the protected characteristics in an age-appropriate way, helping them to grow as respectful and responsible members of society.
Our curriculum is carefully planned and delivered in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Through our Ten:Ten Life to the Full RSHE programme, pupils explore themes relating to equality, dignity, relationships and respect in a manner that is both age-appropriate and rooted in our Catholic values.
By fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging, we aim to ensure that every child feels safe, valued and able to flourish as a unique child of God.
